A 4-block residential society with 12 overhead tanks and 2 sumps faced persistent challenges in managing its water supply. During a recent on-site visit, we observed the tangible impact of IoT-based water management. What was once dependent on manual checks and constant oversight is now supported by a system that ensures accuracy, efficiency, and transparency across the community. With real-time visibility available to both residents and maintenance teams, the society has moved from reactive practices to a smarter, more reliable approach to water management.

Problem 

The residential complex struggled with daily water management. Frequent overflows and occasional shortages disrupted residents, especially during peak morning hours. Security guards had to climb tanks and manually operate motors, creating safety risks and increasing workload. Variations in tank sizes across blocks made pumping schedules inefficient, while unpredictable water supply timings complicated operations. The lack of automation and real-time monitoring led to wasted effort, higher operational risks, and reactive rather than proactive water management. 

Our Approach and Solutions 

To address these challenges, we deployed 14 Waltr A units, 6 Waltr C units, and 12 Waltr V units, creating a smart water management system tailored to their setup of multiple overhead tanks and sumps across four blocks. The solution focused on automation, safety, and ease of use:  

  • Automation of Water Operations: Replaced manual motor operation and tank-level checks with automated control, reducing dependency on security staff and eliminating safety risks. 

  • Real-Time Monitoring and Alerts: Ultrasonic sensors continuously monitor water levels across all tanks and sumps, providing near real-time updates and actionable alerts to management and security. 

  • Customized Pump Scheduling: Optimized pumping schedules based on varying tank sizes, preventing overflow and shortages. 

  • Simplified User Interface: Intuitive UI designed for ease of use by security personnel and management, ensuring smooth adoption. 

  • Responsive Support and Maintenance: Timely issue resolution and ongoing support minimize disruption. 

  • Data-Driven Insights: Detailed reports track usage patterns, detect leaks, and enable informed maintenance and cost optimization decisions. 

Our Devices 

To deliver a seamless smart water management experience, we deployed a suite of specialized IoT devices designed for reliability and ease of use: 

Waltr A – Water Level Indicator: Accurately measures water levels in overhead tanks and sumps using ultrasonic sensors, providing real-time data updates. Compact and easy to install inside tanks without needing modifications. 

Waltr C – Automatic Water Level Controller: Automatically controls water pumps based on live water level data to prevent overflow and dry runs, optimizing pump operation and saving energy. Compatible with single-phase and three-phase motors. 

Waltr B – Borewell Scheduler: Manages borewell pump schedules intelligently, reducing water wastage and ensuring optimal water extraction based on demand patterns. 

Waltr Q & V – Water Quality & Usage Monitors: Advanced sensors monitor water quality parameters and track inflow/outflow for comprehensive water management insights. 

Together, these devices work in harmony to automate, monitor, and optimize water usage, providing residential societies with a smart, efficient, and worry-free system. 

Results 

Since implementing Waltr’s smart water management system, the society has seen: 

  1. Near 100% Elimination of Overflow: Frequent daily overflows have been almost completely resolved, preserving water and preventing wastage. 

  2. Reduced Manual Workload and Enhanced Safety: Security guards no longer climb tanks or manually operate pumps, reducing risks and allowing focus on core duties. 

  3. Efficient Water Usage: Real-time data-driven pump schedules improve water distribution efficiency across blocks with varying tank sizes.
